LIVING WITH- MARCUS KUHN AKA THE GYPSY GENTLEMAN

LIFE LIVED COLLECTION COTTAGE

Who lives here- Marcus Kuhn

Whats your occupation? Gypsy, some times film maker, a lot of time fancy scab maker

How do you describe your interior style? I'de say the outside reflects the inside , so my house is a reflection of all the things I've collected in my mind, my take on life artistically, all the things that I think are beautiful and interesting. As a artist I like to be surrounded by beautiful things. Its kind of a spiritual basis for me. It's a temple that guards me from the chaos and darkness of the outside world.

What are the main influences behind your interior style? Comfortable, old , turn of the century antiques, colourful art from Japan, Tibet, South America, Mexico. theres just a certain element of elegance. My dad is an antique dealer so I've always and that interest.

Whats your favourite room? Why?  My bedroom because its full of all the things from my family from the whaling history. My family was a whaling family so I have all these old prints from japan and the stuff from my family thats the nearest and dearest to me.

Do you collect most of  your pieces locally or through travel? I travel for work so much so I always allow my self one or two really big purchases on each voyage. I used to buys tons of little things but now I just get one or two like a real edo period print or a beautiful sculpture to ship home. All the religious kind of stuff has been picked out mostly on the East Coast . The antique scene on the East Coast is really good , Its the oldest part of the country. Ive done a lot of traveling across the country so I'de  get a truck and just stop at every antique flea market. I'de pick through a lot of rubbish and a lot of the things that I like other people would just pass by.

Whats your Favourite art work?  What I  now have Ive basically boiled it down to all the things I really like.

Is there a must have item you still want for your home? No I think I have everything I want. I've collecting for a long time , I don't really need anything else. All I want now is stability and a bigger savings account.

Is there particular style or origin  you like to collect from?  Old Americana,  Japanese,  Tibetan, Argentinian  , Costa Rican,  and  early 20th century folk art.

Do you have a favourite destination thats a must go to for collecting for your home?  Lately I really like this town in Costa Rica called Sarchi, where I've gotten some mandalas from. They have a factory there way up in the mountains. It's the same art that was developed in Argentina called Fileteado which is this ornamental sign painting and colour pattern dynamic.Right now thats my favourite art candy store because I can pretty much customer order what ever I want.
